Established in 1952, Guangdong Polytechnic of Water Resources and Electric Engineering is the only public full-time vocational college in Guangdong Province that focuses on water Conservancy and electricity. In 2015, the college was named the fourth national civilized unit by the Central Civilization Commission.
Guangdong Polytechnic of Water Resources and Electric Engineering (GPWE) is the national (demonstration) key vocational college, the first batch of national demonstration colleges for water conservancy vocational education, the top 50 demonstration units for employment in universities across the country, the Ministry of Education's "Excellent Unit for Talent Cultivation in Higher Vocational Colleges", and they are the second vice chairman of the council at China Water Resources Vocational Education Group. GPWE was repeatedly awarded the title of "Advanced Unit of Vocational Education" by Guangdong province.
GPWE consists of Guangzhou Tianhe Campus, Guangzhou Conghua Campus, Feilaixia Teaching Training Base and Jiangwan Intern Power Station, etc.. It covers an area of 1,100 acres, a total construction area is 340,000 square meters, and includes 308 experimental training bases inside and outside the school. There are 13,495 full-time students, more than 800 faculty members. Among them, 273 faculties are senior professional title teachers, 1 teacher is the state council subsidy expert, 2 teachers are the second-level professors, 21 professors, 56 doctors, 330 masters, and title with "double-teacher quality" teachers account for 90.2 % among the full-time professional teachers.
GPWE is the "National Water Resources Industry Targeted Training Institute" of the Ministry of Water Resources, the "Vocational Skills Identification Station for Special Works in the Water Resources Industry" of the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, and the "National Computer Information High-tech Examination Station" and it is one of the institutions responsible for the implementation of the "Construction Industry Skills Training and Training Project" by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Construction. GPWE is also the Guangdong Provincial "High-skilled Talent Training Base" and "Guangdong Provincial Special Operations Personnel Safety Technology Training Institute"; In 2006, with the approval of the Guangdong Provincial Department of Labor and Social Security, the "Guangdong Institute of Water Conservancy and Electric Power Vocational Technical College Vocational Skills Identification" was established; In 2003 and 2010, the college was awarded the "Advanced Unit of Vocational Education" by Guangdong province; In 2004, it was awarded as an excellent level of personnel training in higher vocational colleges and universities of the Ministry of Education; In 2008, it was named as the first batch of provincial demonstration higher vocational colleges that entered the ranks of Guangdong province; In 2011, the first batch was confirmed by the State Ministry of Water Resources as "a national demonstration college for water Conservancy vocational education"; In 2010, it was identified by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance as a project construction unit for key higher vocational colleges across the country. In 2018, it won the "Top 50 Asian Professional Colleges and Universities".
GPWE has ten teaching departments, including the School of Water Engineering, the School of Electrical Engineering, the School of Economics and Management, the Department of Automatic Engineering, the Department of Computer Information Engineering, the Department of Civil Engineering, the Department of Architecture and Environment, the Department of Mechanical Engineering, and the Department of Applied Foreign Languages of the Municipal Engineering. GPWE set up 50 majors (directions), such as water Conservancy and hydropower construction engineering, power supply and power supply technology, power plant equipment operation and maintenance, construction engineering technology, machinery manufacturing and automation, computer application technology, administrative management, and business English, among those 6 majors are operated by Sino-foreign cooperation. With the school specialty, its professional settings meet the needs of the market and its career development prospects are good. The employment rate in the past three years has exceeded 99 %.
Through the establishment of cooperation platform, GPWE enhances the level of communication and cooperation, further promotes the college to optimize the profession, improves the curriculum, improves the teachers’ ability, and continuously improves the overall level of the college. In recent years, our university has established friendly and cooperative relations with many colleges in Canada's Sherton College, Taiwan's Longhua University of Science and Technology, Nantai University of Science and Technology, and Waneng University of Science and Technology. We conducted Chinese-foreign cooperation in running schools, teacher-student exchanges, and student studies and other forms of exchanges and cooperation. In 2012, GWPE and Homs Grant Government Polytechnic Institute in Australia successively established three Sino-Australian cooperation projects in construction engineering technology, architectural design technology, and applied English(hotel and exhibition). We jointly trained more than 500 students. In 2016 with the United States Jackson College’s cooperation in running schools, the first Chinese-foreign cooperatively-run school has been set up in Guangdong Province. The school actively integrates the model of international talent training, improves the structure of multi-level talent training, improves the quality of international talent training, and brings the standards of graduate talents and abilities into line with international standards. It has gone out of a distinctive Chinese-foreign cooperation school road, and our international influence has continued to increase.
